Description
Wall cavities, a common place for mold growth, can be sampled
using the non-destructive Wall Inspector Kit. Unlike destructive
methods such as core sampling that can also release fungal spores
into indoor
air, the Wall Inspector Kit requires only a 3/8-inch hole in
the base of a wall and greatly reduces the chance of fungal
spore contamination of indoor air during sampling. The Wall
Inspector Kit includes
VersaTrap Cassettes, VersaTrap Wall Adapters, and other items
needed for non-destructive
sampling in wall cavities. The kit is used with a sample pump
capable of drawing air at a flow rate of 15 L/min for short
sampling times
up to two minutes. When used correctly, the Wall Inspector Kit
reliably samples fungal growth within wall cavities for microscopic
analysis.
Using the Wall Inspector Kit
The Wall Inspector Kit is simple to use. Locate the sample wall,
drill a small hole in an inconspicuous area with the provided
drill and bit, and insert the VersaTrap Wall Adapter into the hole.
Connect
a provided VersaTrap Cassette to a sample pump capable of providing
a 15 L/min airflow, such as the QuickTake 30, and sample for
approximately two minutes. Seal the cassette and send to a laboratory
for analysis.
Hidden Mold Problems
Several agencies have determined that mold growth indoors can
cause detrimental health effects. Wall cavities are common sites for
toxigenic and allergenic fungi growth. Mold spores can emit from any
wall opening, even electrical outlets, or be moved throughout a building
via the ventilation system. Mold spore release is so insidious that
regular air sampling of ambient indoor air may not detect an active
problem because spores settle into carpeting and other materials in
a building. These spores remain settled until human activity re-aerosolizes
them causing exposure.
